At first I hated it…I was a hardcore Myspace fan. But lately the constant error messages had me considering Facebook. After a bit of playing tonight, I may just use it more often. Of course that leads me to only one problem….
I have no friends! So if you have Facebook, feel free to add me.

So today for the first time in a long time, I logged into Myspace. Now I “log in” all the time to check my messages or read my comments, but I never actually “log on” where you spend an hour just reading profiles and surfing around getting sucked into the vortex that is myspace. And the entire exercise made me a little sad.
There are a dozen or so ladies that are in my playgroup that I have on my myspace buddy list, and I went to respond to one, and then I get caught up in this back and forth banter between the group about random things. So and so wanting to know about something, then someone said “Great seeing you yesterday at playgroup…” yada, yada, yada…But then it struck me- nobody has said anything to me in like a week? So then, I get that sinking feeling like I am back in high school and wishing that I was sitting at the “cool table” at lunch. I am almost 27 years old- I am too old for this kind of thinking!
Now, don’t get me wrong, from the moment that I logged into myspace there was a little voice in my head whispering…
“You’re too damn old for this!”
But yet, I proceeded to set up my myspace page and even spent the effort making it look all snazzy. I was hooked in the beginning. I sent comments to everyone on a daily basis, and was the model myspacer. I read all the bulletins, and told everyone “100 random things about me” on a daily basis. But then, I got busy. The baby started teething, my work load picked up, I moved, and suddenly I dropped off the myspace map. And apparently, if you stop sending your myspace friends random “WAZ UP” comments, they move on to someone else that will fill up their comment boxes with sparkly goodness.
So then my myspace sadness was then filled with something else…my underlying need for a real local friendship. (I have one or two great friends that live elsewhere, But you can’t come hang over on a random thursday afternoon…) Not the cosmetic-myspace friendships- I have 100 some odd people on my myspace list, but how many of them know when my birthday is? Maybe 5.
Now in my old age (ok I am not that old, but I feel it sometimes), my criteria for a friend has changed considerably. I am not cool- by any stretch of the imagination. Don’t invite me to go clubbing with you, cause I am not that kind of girl. I stay home alot, I hang out with my kid and my husband. If you want to come over for dinner, maybe rent a movie, and let the kids play then I am your gal. I will talk to you about things that matter (at least to us) and I am the girl to come to if you are having a problem with your husband, or need advice on something. I love to have meaningful conversations. I tend to be shy at first- which is becoming more apparent now that I am a mommy. I think there is only so much attention sucking that can go on in a family dynamic- and with an outgoing husband, and an outgoing kid someone has to be in the background keeping things together…)
Now that we are a family- it’s harder to find friends I think. Because everyone is involved now. Is it too much to want a friend who has a hubby that may hang out with mine on occasion and play some video games? Or someone with a kid that will play with mine? And then of course someone that is willing to put up with me?
Baby is up from his nap- so my ponderings must end for now…just wanted to share my thoughts on the ol might myspace….
